Cash-strapped municipalities such as Middlebury need relief from the state as they prepare municipal budgets at a time when revenues are declining and more people are seeking the critical services towns provide, chief elected officials from around the state said at a budget roundtable at the State Capitol Tuesday.

When the state legislature’s majority Democrats Wednesday refused to consider more than token cuts in state spending in the face of a mounting budget deficit they may have set the stage for major tax increases that could devastate middle class families in Waterbury, Middlebury and elsewhere in Connecticut, state Representative Anthony J. D’Amelio said.

As the 2009 General Assembly session gets underway, legislators’ most important goal must be to resolve the state’s budget crisis in ways that do not aggravate and prolong the recession, resulting in more business failures and job losses, state Representative Anthony J. D’Amelio said today.
